20+ Bizarre Movie Posters From Africa That Are So Bad, They’re Good

We take movie posters for granted in the Western world. Sure, they’ve all started to look pretty similar, and they definitely overuse that orange/blue color dynamic, but we don’t know how good we have it. After all, we have a giant film industry that would never jeopardize the success of a movie by just hiring anyone to create the poster, let alone draw it by hand.

However, that’s exactly what takes place in other countries, like Ghana. These African movie posters were drawn by hand, sometimes on rough canvas, by people who had never seen the movies and had a limited understanding of what the actual plots were. The African movie posters have their origins in Ghana’s cinema clubs, which were usually just outdoor seating in front of a TV and VCR. Often the poster artists would just create images they knew would draw a crowd. The posters are still drawn by some of the same artists, but they are sold as art pieces in the United States.

That being said, there are plenty of classic movie posters that have stood the test of time.

1. Home Alone 2: Lost in New York: It’s a tale as old as time: boy gets lost in New York when his family leaves him behind during their vacation (again), he ends up in New York, meets Donald Trump, and thwarts the exact same burglars he did two years ago. The recreated poster from Ghana is pretty faithful to the original, something that can’t be said for all of them.

2. Mission Impossible II: This poster definitely has the requisite amount of explosions and guns needed to grab people’s attention, although it’s really hard to ignore the fact that Tom Cruise looks different on this poster than he does in person. Then again, how could any artist accurately portray Cruise’s giant personality?
