Remember Gabourey Sidibe? At the age of 26, she was cast as the lead role in the 2009 film Precious. Before that, she had no acting credits to her name. Her character in Precious was an overweight, abused, illiterate teen who was pregnant with her second child in New York’s Harlem.
After her performance in this film, she got a ton of attention and admiration. She was then featured in hit shows like American Horror Story, Empire, and Difficult People…the latter two she is currently starring in.
The Oscar-nominated actress is now 34 and is on a new mission: to lose weight. But it hasn’t come easy. Earlier this year Sidibe revealed that she went through stomach surgery to help her lose some weight after trying to lose weight naturally for so long.
She received laparoscopic bariatric surgery about 18 months ago but didn’t reveal the amount that she’s lost since then, until now.
Her surgeon, Dr. Bradley Schwack, told Inside Edition, “you take the stomach, which is actually about the size of a football, and you staple and remove 80 percent of the stomach”.
Sidibe was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and that was her motivation to lose weight. Now she says she’s extremely proud of her body. But we can’t give full credit to the surgery.
The actress has been working hard at the gym. Every month she’s been showing her progress, becoming stronger, fitter and losing the excess fat from her body.
The actress has posted multiple photos on her Instagram of herself working out and doing various activities in the gym. She looks like she’s enjoying every second of it as well.
Her most recent photo that she has posted is honestly an incredible transformation. Most importantly she’s become this fabulous, confident and determined woman. But the actress doesn’t really like people commenting on her weight loss journey.
In her recently published memoir, Gabourey wrote, “I could lose weight. That is a fact. But I am dope at any and every size. I am smart. I am funny. I am talented. I am gorgeous. I am black. I am fat.” This girl is confident in her skin no matter what size she is!
The actress has come a long way since she got her first big role in Precious. But it’s not only her outer appearance that has transformed, it’s her confidence and attitude that has definitely inspired other women to be confident in who they are.
