PinterestTweens today seem to try and dress up like they’re in their twenties. They try really hard to keep up with the latest trends, sometimes not realizing that they are just too young to wear the things that they’re wearing.
I’m talking about crop tops, short-shorts, chokers and even high-waisted jeans. Sure, they look cute and stylish but at the end of the day, it’s not exactly what I was wearing when I was that age. I guess times are seriously changing!
For mom Katie Smith, letting her daughter wear what she wants is something she’s proud of. At the same time, there are things she wishes she didn’t wear. So one day, she decided to do a little experiment, and her daughter was up for it.
She thought it would be a fun experiment to have her 62-year-old mom dress her 12-year-old daughter for an entire week.
Katie noted to Babble that her mother shops at Sears and is pretty conservative, whereas her tween daughter is more on the edgy side.
So we basically have two tastes on the opposite side of the pole. What could go wrong, right? Well, what happened was pretty surprising.
On day 1, her granddaughter loved the two pieces separately but didn’t like the fact that her grandma combined them into an outfit.
Katie wrote on Babble that her daughter told her, “I would just never wear these together. I would wear the top with shorter shorts because the top is big and flowy.”
On day 2 her daughter wore a simple black dress with short sleeves. Her daughter absolutely loved it and wouldn’t have changed anything about it.
In fact, Katie wrote that she wears it all the time with sneakers or sandals. Clearly, grandma did a great job with that one.
On day 3, the outfit was a fail. Her daughter, Anna, wasn’t a fan of combining jeggings with a sporty tank top and a baseball hat.
According to the Tween rulebook, you are never to pair sporty tops with jean leggings. They two just don’t go together. But to her mother and grandma, it looks cute.
The outfit on day 4 was Anna’s mom’s favourite. But Anna wasn’t a fan. Katie noted that apparently kimono tops are to be worn with crop tops and shorts, or over a bathing suit.
On day 5, the white dress was a success but only for special occasions. The mom remembers a time when her daughter would wear pretty dresses all the time. But she’s over that phase.
The outfit on day 6 was a success and was actually one of Anna’s favourites. According to Katie, she was more than happy to wear it for the day.
The only issue was that her mom got the accessories with the outfit all wrong. Anna told her mom, “Grams got the accessories all wrong. I would wear different ones. Like a choker would look way better.”
On day 7, Katie let Anna style herself after being such a good sport about this entire thing. She went back to her crop top and short shorts outfit.
Babble.com Katie SmithBy the end of this whole thing, Anna’s mother learned that it’s not that her mother’s style is worse than her own style or her daughter’s. It’s just that everyone has their own taste.
