4-Year-Old Girl Fatally Shoots Herself While Reaching For Candy In Grandmother’s Purse

A four-year-old girl in Florida has been pronounced dead after accidentally shooting herself with her grandmother’s gun. Allegedly, the girl was reaching into her grandmother’s purse to find some candy.

Tampa Bay Times reported that the girl, Yanelly Zoller, had obtained the weapon from her grandmother’s purse and accidentally shot herself in the chest. When interviewed by Tampa Bay Times, her father, Shane Zoller, 22, recalled how he was on his way to pick up Yanelly from her grandmother’s house when he pulled up and saw police cars outside the home.

He added that his grandparents had helped him raise Yanelly when he was still in school and had they not assisted him in her upbringing, he would have had to drop out of school. Due to their involvement, Yanelly had a close connection with them. “She was extremely close to them and would get so excited when she got to stay at her nana’s house,” Shane told the paper. “She was attached to her nana’s hip.”

A GoFundMe page and a YouCaring page have been created to help the family with funeral costs as well as any additional costs that may be needed. Her YouCaring page was updated on September 22 to inform donors that Yanelly received a proper burial and funeral service, though the family is still in need of purchasing a headstone.

Judy Cornett of Tampa, Florida, started the YouCaring page and shared a story about the incident for donors to read. “Please love your children…please let them know you love them and never go to bed without giving them their little kisses and their hugs because you never know when it’ll be the last time you’ll say good night,” she wrote.

Her GoFundMe page has raised nearly enough to match that of the $5,000 goal and has been shared over 600 times on Facebook. Her YouCaring page has over 100 shares and has raised over $500 towards its target.

Shane is the father of two additional children, one of which is on the way.
