Ariana Grande Wore A Dress That Looks Like The Sistine Chapel’s Ceiling, And She Might Be Coming For Rihanna’s Title As Met Gala Queen

The Met Gala has been the site of some of the most amazing and outrageous outfits in the last few decades. It’s been coined by pop culture observers as one of the most exclusive events ever. It’s actually a fundraiser to help raise money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. The Gala itself has been around for a great deal of time, but the fundraiser, according to Wikipedia, with the themes, pomp and circumstance, started in 1971.

According to author Laird Borrelli-Persson at Vogue, this year’s theme at the gala was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” which opens up a whole can of worms in terms of visuals. The amazing theme is described by Borrelli-Persson as: “The display of these extraordinary ecclesiastical pieces will highlight the enduring influence of religion and liturgical vestments on fashion.”

One actress and singer who really took this theme seriously was Ariana Grande and her “Sistine Chapel” gown that may just prove to dethrone Rihanna’s previous dresses at the Met Gala. Rihanna is known for her extravagant, gorgeous and stylish costumes at previous met galas, and she might have found her rival in Ariana Grande.  According to the artist herself in an interview with E!, this is Ariana’s first time attending the Met Gala! “I am honoured to be here. It is my first Met so I am really excited,” said Ariana to E!

As for the dress itself, it features a gorgeous print based on Michelangelo’s “The Last Judgement,” the world-famous painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican in Rome. The iconic painting has been featured in popular culture and in history books for hundreds of years. Ariana’s beautiful dress was designed by the talented fashion designer Vera Wang according to Time, who has previously dressed celebrities like Rita Ora, and Michelle Williams, and not mention countless dozens of celebrity wedding dresses.

In her interview with E!, Ariana described her dress with a great deal of glee and excitement saying, “[It is in] the Sistine Chapel back wall by Michelangelo. It is The Last Judgement. This is the painting I am wearing. I am so excited about my dress. I just love it!” The dress also features that infamous bow on top of her head that Ariana is so well known for.

Many other celebrities wore notable costumes to this year’s Met Gala, including Zendaya’s beautiful Joan of Arc tribute, and a bold choice of a rainbow cape by Lena Waithe! Rihanna went full pope with a dress inspired by the Holy Father’s papal garbs. But it was Ariana’s dress that really stole the show this year.

After seeing all the dresses and costumes at this year’s 2018 Met Gala, I absolutely cannot wait until next year’s gala. However, one thing is for sure: if the theme is anything like this year’s, they’re really going to have to outdo themselves. If Ariana Grande returns next year, I can’t wait to see how she outdoes her dress from this year! Isn’t Ariana Grande awesome?
