Those who have successfully turned their lives around have proven that quitting alcohol didn’t just affect their lifestyles but their physical appearances as well.

A number of former drinkers have taken to Reddit to share their physical transformations after ridding alcohol from their lives. Posting before and after pictures, it’s evident how drinking too much has more than just an internal ramification.

Here are 12 people who gave up alcohol and saw a positive change in their appearance because of it.

1. Reddit user, GhostBackwards, shared a side-by-side comparison of what seven months alcohol-free can do. He wrote, “I was 225 [pounds] when I quit and lost 30 within the first month. For anyone in a similar position just please reach out for help.”

2. Reddit user, size16french, turned his life around after being admitted to the hospital for acute pancreatitis. After just six months of sobriety, his appearance saw a drastic change and he was able to complete a 33-mile bike ride.

3. Klamsykrawl shared his transformation to the “stopdrinking” subreddit, writing, “One year of no alcohol. 53 pounds lighter and a thousand times happier. I tried recreating the fatty bloated pic best I could.”

4. It doesn’t always have to be a drastic physical transformation, some people’s happiness from going alcohol-free is evident in their smiles and eyes. “Finally made it to 90 days,” harajuka wrote on her Reddit post.

5. Reddit user, brittsuzanne, decided to put down the bottle of vodka and check herself into rehab. 8 and a half months later, she’s dropped 35 pounds and states that she finally feels like herself again.

6. After six years of heavy drinking, Imgur user luscrib89 decided to make a change. Only a year and a half later, it’s blatant just how much healthier he looks.

7. “I am incredibly grateful to have picked up my two-year chip today,” silverladder wrote on Reddit. “My life is 180 degrees from where it was just two years ago. I am thankful for sobriety and thankful to have a second chance at life.”

8. Reddit user, dr_dan_is_sober, found himself trapped in a downward spiral, but just a year and a half quitting alcohol, he managed to completely turn his life around.

9. Reddit user, MyMorningBender, found that after only a half a year of sobriety, he not only noticed a positive change in his physicality but also his mental health.

10. Celebrating six months sober, Caudebac posted a collage of her transition into sobriety, writing, “I feel so incoherently happy and proud and overwhelmed and humble and just so, so, so grateful.”

11. Sometimes it helps to have a partner on the road to sobriety. This couple looks completely different and a whole lot happier after going without alcohol for 3 years and 5 months.

12. To celebrate his 300th day sober, Imgur user MEATTEEO wore one of his old shirts to show how much he’s changed.
