Man Abandons Dog Outside Dunkin’ Donuts With Note Stuck To Her Collar

Cat and dog overpopulation is at a crisis level in New Mexico, but authorities are turning to the public in hopes that they can solve one recent case of abandonment. Video surveillance shows the heartbreaking moment a man left a pregnant dog outside of a Dunkin’ Donuts, which has prompted police to seek help in identifying the person responsible.

Santa Fe animal services were alerted early on December 26th, 2017 after multiple witnesses spotted a man abandon his dog in the parking lot of a local Dunkin’ Donuts. While the security cameras failed to capture the man’s license plate number, they did manage to get a clear image of his face and the act of desertion.

“The male opened his door and let the dog out of the vehicle with the note attached to its neck,” Santa Fe police stated on Facebook. “The man then proceeded to go into Dunkin’ Donuts and order a cup of coffee. The dog followed the man from the vehicle to the front door of the business but was ignored by the man … Animal services would like any help identifying the man seen in the video.”

The man drove away after leaving the coffee and baked goods chain. The dog, which is currently under the care of licensed veterinarians at the Santa Fe Animal Shelter, was found with a note attached to her collar, which read: “I’m free. I’m having babies.”

The Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society uploaded a picture of the rescued dog to their Facebook page after receiving a number of inquiries. They shared some positive news, writing, “After a thorough examination by our doctors, she is stable and doing well. We do not know whether or not she is pregnant at this time, but we will be monitoring her over the next few days.”

Unfortunately, this heartbreaking story is much more common than it should be. According to People for Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), New Mexico’s public and private animal shelters receive more than 135,000 dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens every year. Over 65,000 of those animals end up euthanized because there are no homes for them.

Hopefully this abandoned dog will find the forever home she deserves, but until then, the Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society took the time to thank people who helped bring this story to light, writing, “It’s people like you that care and truly make a difference in the life of these animals.”
