Oh, Ben Affleck. Why?
Some new images of Ben Affleck’s back tattoo have surfaced after the Hollywood actor was spotted swimming in Hawaii during a training session. According to People magazine, Affleck was training alongside Charlie Hunnam, Oscar Issac, and Garrett Hedlund for their upcoming film Triple Frontier expected to be released in 2019. The film centers around five friends who reunite in an attempt to take down a South American drug lord.
Affleck claimed way back in 2015 that the back tattoo was for a film and that it was fake in an interview with Mario Lopez for the show Extra. Sadly, it appears as though this was a lie as it appears that this tattoo is very much still there after being spotted in these photos alongside his fellow actors. Just what exactly was Affleck’s inspiration for this tattoo? Only the Lord knows…the Lord and Ben.
The pictures very quickly went viral which had internet users quickly shredding the star’s choices. Several Twitter users were wondering if Ben Affleck is okay, another user, Dashiell Driscoll (@dashiell) said that “Ben Affleck’s back tattoo is, and I’m saying this without hyperbole, one of the funniest goddamn things I’ve ever seen in my entire life. Holy moly. What a wonderful gift to all of us this is. Truly a great day to be alive because of this obscenely dumb tattoo.” Others speculated that it was a “midlife crisis” of some kind.
Another Twitter user, Crystal Methanny (@RafiDAngelo) stated that “Next time you’re feeling sad, remember that you’re not Ben Affleck so you (probably) don’t have a tattoo so big and so ugly and so universally ridiculed that you had to lie and say it was only temporary and just for a movie when it is so clearly not.”
The tattoo itself appears to be a phoenix rising from the ashes, which perhaps is a metaphor Affleck feels akin to his life. Nobody really knows why the actor got the tattoo, however, many were quick to point out its absurdly large nature. Both of Affleck’s former exes Jennifer Lopez and Jennifer Garner chimed in.
In an interview with Andy Cohen, Lopez stated, “It’s awful! What are you doing?” and “plead the fifth” during a segment on Watch What Happens Live. Gardner spoke with Variety back in 2016 about the tattoo, saying “A phoenix rising from the ashes. Am I the ashes in this scenario? I take umbrage, I refuse to be the ashes.”
Whatever Affleck’s reasons for the decision, it has no doubt left more than a few people scratching their heads. To each their own! If a giant, colorful, peacock-looking phoenix on your back brings you happiness, then good! One thing is for darn sure, people on the internet are not too thrilled about the actor’s choices. Now we’re extra curious if the tattoo will be featured in the upcoming film Triple Frontier (2019). Will Affleck have any shirtless scenes featuring his new Phoenix? Only time will tell!
