First Look At Renee Zellweger As Judy Garland Has People Concerned

When it was revealed Renee Zellweger would play Judy Garland in a biopic about the American icon’s life, people had some reservations. Although there’s no question Zellweger is a talented actress, it always gets tricky when it comes to filling the shoes of someone else. Particularly, someone so beloved in the eyes of the public.

Judy Garland rose to fame after her role as Dorothy in ‘The Wizard of Oz’. Garland continued an impressive career as a leading lady, starring in classic films like ‘A Star Is Born’ and ‘Meet Me in St. Louis’. Garland also lent her voice across hundreds of notable soundtracks.

Although she had a successful career, the actress struggled in her personal life. She made multiple suicide attempts and was admitted to a psychiatric hospital for two weeks after the first. Garland passed away at the age of 47 after an accidental overdose of barbiturates, a central nervous system depressant that can cause mild sedation to total anesthesia.

It’s not surprising that a biopic of Garland’s life would come to fruition, but some were surprised when it was announced Zellweger would play the leading role. Zellweger herself has had a successful career, best known for her performance as Bridget Jones in the successful series. Although Zellweger has proved, like Garland, that can she can be a very charismatic actress, some people still had reservations.

Some fans were concerned after Zellweger looked noticeably different when she stepped out for Elle magazine’s ‘Women in Hollywood Awards’ in 2014. Many suspected the actress had plastic surgery done that took away from her natural looks. However, it seems Renee Zellweger is now giving fans peace of mind after the first pictures of her dramatic transformation to Judy Garland were revealed.

The 48-year-old actress was caught in a short brown wig and furry dark brown jacket while filming in London, looking eerily like Garland. The biopic is set in 1968 and tells the story of Garland arriving for her final concerts in London, 30 years after her rise to fame in ‘The Wizard Of Oz’.

‘Judy’ will focus on Garland’s romance with her fifth husband Mickey Deans (played by Finn Wittrock), whom the actress married several months before her death in June 1969. Although some people are still skeptical of whether or not Zellweger can pull it off, you can’t deny the actress looks the part.
