For those TLC lovers, you’ve probably heard of the show My 600 lb Life. While filming an episode of the reality show on November 15, 2017, a man featured on the show passed away. The episode was supposed to be aired this past week.
Robert Buchel is a 41-year-old from Forked River in New Jersey. He died of a heart attack after being on a weight loss plan for about five months and dropped 340 lbs. According to Daily Mail, Robert was declared morbidly obese by doctors.
In just his first month alone, it was reported that Robert dropped a whopping 124 lbs. According to the National Post, his fiancée noted that she was shocked at how cranky Buchel had become after his surgery.
While he was still alive, his fiancée noted, “It’s like a flip has been switched. He’s been nasty since the surgery because he can’t get the drugs.” Daily Mail reports that he was sent back to the rehab facility.
There, they tried to get him to start walking again, but Robert refused. A week later he suffered the heart attack and passed away. It’s reported that the death got little attention until people found out that his episode would be airing this past week.
Before his passing, once Buchel had dropped a certain amount of weight, he was transferred to a rehab facility where he started walking. Then after another two months, he had lost a total of 217 lbs. After that, he lost even more weight.
Once he lost a total of 295 lbs and dropped to 547 lbs, the surgery removed one of the lymphedema masses on his right side. You would think after the surgery, things would’ve started looking up for Robert.
His fiancée took to Facebook to show her sadness and loss just two days after Buchel’s death. She shared an old photo of the two together and confirmed his passing. She wrote, “I don’t know how to start what is going to be the most painful facebook post I will ever write…”
She continued, “I know this is late and I would like to apologize to everyone that I haven’t been able to reach out to all of you before it was released to Facebook. On Wednesday, November 15, 2017, the love of my life, my best friend, my closest confidant, Robert Buchel passed away suddenly.”
A GoFundMe page was set up by the couple’s friend in a bid to raise money for moving expenses, hospital bills, and Buchel’s memorial service. According to a source, Kathryn went into a lot of debt after leaving her family, friends, and job in order to move to another state to help her fiance overcome his health struggles.
His fiancée wrote in her Facebook post, “I wish I could say that my heart was broken or even shattered, but in reality, it is just gone. My heart died along with him. Our future together died along with him…”
