Harry Broke Down During Final Bars Of Mother’s Favorite Hymn

Prince Harry has admitted to crying twice over the death of his mother. The first time, he reveals in an ITV documentary entitled Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, was at Diana’s funeral in Althorp Park, just over 20 years ago: “And only since then, maybe once more. There’s a lot of grief that still needs to be…to be let out,” he confessed.

This pain, combined with the thrill of watching his beautiful American bride, Meghan Markle, walk down the aisle, with the world as a witness, brought Harry to tears yet again. Markle, wearing a custom Givenchy gown, carried a bouquet of white forget-me-nots in honour of Diana, as they were her favourite flowers. Meghan also wore an engagement ring almost identical to her late mother-in-law’s aquamarine gem to her reception.

The young couple decided to have their wedding choir sing one of the Princess’ most-loved hymns, O Thou Great Redeemer, as a tribute. The song, which was also performed at her funeral at Westminster Abbey, when he was just 12-years-old, was chanted by The Kingdom Choir, a British gospel group conducted by Karen Gibson. As the closing bars were sung, the prince attempted to hold back his grief as his eyes visibly watered in remembrance of that day.

I mean, it’s one thing to know that you’re going to do this, but when you actually get here…the atmosphere, the number of people, the attention—it really does blow your mind so to be in that room, to be in that chapel and to be one of the few people that actually get to be in there and experience it, it’s very surreal,” a member of the choir told CBS News. “But it’s wonderful. It’s incredible.” The group also sang a breathtaking rendition of Stand By Me by Ben E. King, which was a performance celebrated all over social media by thousands of viewers and the press worldwide.

After the service at St George’s Chapel, which included a brief reading of the eighth chapter of the Song of Solomon done by Lady Jane Fellowes, Diana’s sister, the couple headed to their lunchtime reception at Frogmore House, where Sir Elton John sang a medley of his most famous songs. John also paid his respects at Lady Diana’s funeral in 1997 with a performance of one of his classics, Candle In The Wind.

Diana was continually honoured through their wedding portraits, while the newly appointed Duke and Duchess of Sussex, sat on the same couch used during the official christening photos of Harry in 1984, according to News.com.au. The pair posed alongside Markle’s mother, The Queen, her husband, Harry’s father, also known as Charles the Prince of Wales, and his wife Camilla as well as his brother, Prince William, Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton, and their children.

Though the late Diana was unable to attend her son’s wedding, Harry is sure she would have loved his new wife. During an interview with BBC News in November 2017, Prince Harry revealed that his mother and Markle would have been “thick as thieves” had she still been alive. “I think she would be over the moon, jumping up and down, you know so excited for me, but then, as I said, would have probably been best friends — best friends with Meghan,” he said. “It is days like today when I really miss having her around and miss being able to share the happy news.”
