Queen Elsa From ‘Frozen’ Could Be Getting A Girlfriend

Representing LGBTQ+ characters in mainstream art has been an uphill climb for a number of years now, however, Disney’s ‘Frozen’ Director Jennifer Lee hinted that Queen Elsa might be less frigid with her orientation in the upcoming Frozen 2.

In a recent interview with the Huffington Post, Lee spoke out about the massive fan outcry for a LGBTQ+ orientation in Elsa after the hit song ‘Let It Go’ became a coming-out anthem for people everywhere. Lee said that Where we’re going with it, we have tons of conversations about it, and we’re really conscientious about these things,” Lee when on to say that, “For me…Elsa’s every day telling me where she needs to go, and she’ll continue to tell us. I always write from character-out, and where Elsa is and what Elsa’s doing in her life, she’s telling me every day. We’ll see where we go.”

Lee is currently touring at media events surrounding work on her latest screenwriting project A Wrinkle In Time. She shares this writing credit with screenwriter Jeff Stockwell. The film is a book adaptation of the bestselling children’s book A Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L’Engle. At the event, Lee also spoke about the voices of the LGBTQ+ community, telling the Huffington Post: “I love everything people are saying [and] people are thinking about with our film ― that it’s creating dialogue, that Elsa is this wonderful character that speaks to so many people. It means the world to us that we’re part of these conversations.”

A great deal of fan art has circulated through the internet featuring everyone’s new favorite Queen with a potential ‘girlfriend’, however, this is all a matter of pure speculation. Whether or not Disney will go this far has yet to be seen through their art. However, they have hinted at LGBTQ+ themes in the past, including a couple in Finding Dory, as well as their first TV-Debut gay character on the TV series Andi Mack. Disney has also featured a gay couple on the TV-series Good Luck Charlie. Moving to feature Elsa as a gay character in the upcoming sequel Frozen 2 might not be far from the truth. Recently, the newest live action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast featured an on-screen gay character, LeFou, who has the hots for Gaston (who doesn’t?) as envisioned by actor Josh Gad.

The stop-motion animated film Paranorman produced by Laika Entertainment featured what many believe to be the first openly-gay character in an Animated film. The first openly-gay character to appear on television was the character of Steve in the controversial comedy series All In The Family.

The lyrics of Let It Go that lend themselves to a “coming out anthem” include: Be the good girl you always have to be. Conceal, don’t feel, don’t let them know. Well, now they know.” Similarly, the main chorus of the song with the words, “Let it go, let it go, Can’t hold it back anymore” express feelings of relief when people in the LGBTQ+ community finally do come out.

A recent twitter hashtag campaign called #GiveElsaAGirlfriend trended on Twitter, and the star who played Elsa, Idina Menzel responded to the Twitter trend with reporters at ET, saying, “I think it’s great… Disney has to contend with that. I’ll let them figure it out.”

So it remains to be seen what Jennifer Lee plans to do with the character Elsa in their upcoming sequel Frozen 2. However, given her comforting words to the Huffington Post, we are hopeful that the character continues to be a champion to represent LGBTQ+ characters on the big screen.
