Stories that can inspire some good in this world and also make you feel good at the same time are the best kind of stories. With so many tragic things we hear on the news, all we want to hear is something positive. Well, this story does just that.

I think everyone can agree that one of the most embarrassing things that can happen is getting your card declined at the checkout counter while there are people behind you. At that exact moment, it feels like all eyes are on you and you want to just jump into a deep, dark hole.

One man recently experienced this situation. Only, no one really expected what happened next. Tim McKellar was standing in line at a Dollar Store when he noticed an elderly man in front of him trying to scan his card to pay for his purchases. Only problem? He couldn’t remember his pin. The card was declined.

Jacob Wittman was working at the cash that day and seeing this veteran getting his card declined broke his heart. In fact, he couldn’t watch this guy keep swiping and getting his card declined any longer.

Tim wrote on Facebook: “That’s when the cashier Jacob Wittman pulled his wallet out and told the lady (who had been helping) to scan his card.” If that isn’t the sweetest thing you’ve heard in a while, I don’t know what is.

After Jacob did this, the veteran was a bit confused. He couldn’t understand what exactly was going on, so he asked the cashier: “have you just bought my groceries?”

Jacob told the man that he did indeed just buy his groceries, and the veteran doesn’t owe him a dime. Tim, as I’m sure all of us feel, felt so touched with this act of kindness that he felt the need to share this story on his Facebook page. And because the world needs this inspiration, the post soon went viral.

Tim posted the story online, writing praise for Jacob: “Jacob, you are a good-hearted young man. Thank you for helping the elderly and veterans. God bless you!” He also added, “God bless you young man. So many people could learn from you!”

Tim continued, writing “You are an inspiration to us all. Thank you.” Many people agreed with Tim and praised the young man in the Facebook comments. This act might not seem like such a big deal to some of you. I mean, it’s the dollar store, so what’s the big deal? But that’s the wrong mindset.

Take a page out of that cashier’s book. It’s the simple acts of kindness that actually go a long way. By Jacob paying for the veteran’s groceries, this made the elder man not only the happiest man on earth, but it made him feel appreciated. It makes him see that younger generations appreciate him and what he’s done.

So the next time you see someone in need of assistance, and in your mind, it’s not a big deal, just know that going out of your way to help someone, regardless how big or small it may be, goes a long way.
