Young Nurse Adopts Abused Baby—Days Later Caseworker Drops Bombshell About Infant’s Twin

Being a nurse is one of the most rewarding jobs one can have. But it also can be the most challenging. Day to day you go into your job not knowing the horrors you may have to deal with. Wolfson Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida experienced something that a lot of people can’t deal with. Seeing children who have been malnourished and abused. This is precisely what happened in March 2017.

A baby girl named Delilah was admitted to the Jacksonville, Florida hospital. After extensive amounts of examinations and testings, it was discovered that this poor child had been completely neglected and abused. According to reports, Delilah was only 14-months-old and she not only had a weak body, she had broken bones and had fractured her skull. The hospital reported that her injuries were from “non-accidental trauma.” Whoever did this to an innocent baby is a pure monster. But for one nurse, just one look at baby Delilah, and she knew that her life was about to be forever changed.

Jess Hamm is a nurse in the pediatric intensive care unit and she happened to be on shift that day that Delilah was brought in. Even though she knew this baby has suffered horrific injuries and abuse, Hamm knew right away what she had to do. She told wfla.com, “My heart was broken. I don’t want to cry. She was just so lifeless but she still held onto my finger”. Jess decided to take Delilah home and adopt her.

As soon as she saw this innocent baby, her instincts kicked in right away and she knew in her heart that she could give this baby the life she deserved, providing for it and giving her endless amounts of love and care. So she took the next steps to go from being Delilah’s nurse to Delilah’s new mom. She set up meetings with caseworkers at the Florida Department of Children and Families. While sitting with the staff and filling out adoption paperwork, Jess learned something about Delilah.

Jess learned something that shocked her. Delilah actually was a twin and her sister Caroline was also in the hospital. But Jess didn’t even think twice about it. She went ahead and adopted both of these girls, giving them a loving and healthy home that they both deserved.

According to Fox News, Hamm explained, “They’ve been through so much. They’re completely different kids. If you had met them when I met them you’d be amazed”. Luckily, now the twins spend their days singing songs and exploring new things that are around them. It just goes to show that with unconditional love, consistent meals, and encouragement, the twins are able to thrive and accomplish various developmental goals.

Hamm also notes that as the twins get older, their different personalities become more noticeable. Caroline is more social, enjoys helping others and is extremely protective of her sister, according to Fox News. Now two, Delilah is extremely lovable, sharing kisses with everyone she meets. Hamm’s dream of becoming a mother has come true. Watch the video below for the full story!
