Man Swimming In Florida Has Legs Bit By Shark

One of the most well-known fears related to swimming in the ocean is that a shark might swim right up to you and chomp down on a limb. Spielberg’s film “Jaws” didn’t make that fear go away either. Specifically, in Florida, more and more sharks have been swimming close to the shore. It’s unknown why, but they are probably looking for more food.

Regardless, it’s not stopping people from swimming and enjoying the beach. Recently, however, in Haulover Beach, Florida, a beachgoer was bitten by a shark on Sunday afternoon, July 9th. The news was reported by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokeswoman Erika Benitez.

Local10 News reports that as people were getting out of the water, a man was bitten on the legs by what appeared to be a 5-foot-long bull shark, according to Benitez. It honestly sounds like something from a movie. A witness named Donovan Cecil told Local 10 News: “It started getting closer to the people at the sandbar and they tried to get out.”

The witness continued noting: “One guy, it went straight towards him and bit his leg, pulled him, gave him a little tug, and I was freaking out.” Luckily, the victim was able to get out of the water. He was helped by lifeguards and taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Cecile noted that “it could have been a lot worse.”

A witness took a photo of the incident. It shows the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue treating the man’s injuries. According to Lt. Matthew Sparling, “It’s extremely rare. This is the first shark attack in Miami-Dade County that I’ve been aware of working 20 years in ocean rescue.”

The Lieutenant told Local10 News that the man was taken to Aventura Hospital as a trauma alert. His condition was not immediately known.

It is not 100% known what kind of shark bit the man, but officials suspect that it could have been a bull shark attack. This is the first reported at Haulover Beach and was 9 miles (14 kilometres) north of Miami Beach.
