If you think you’ve had some bad Tinder dates, don’t worry; they’re probably nowhere near as bad as what happened to one Arizona man. After going on one date, a woman sent 65,000 texts to his phone over a period of 17 months before breaking into his home and taking a bath while he was away. The 31-year-old woman, identified as Jacqueline Ades, was eventually arrested by the Paradise Valley Police Department.
Jacqueline Ades gave a jailhouse press conference to reporters, where she said: “I thought we would just do what everybody else did, and we would get married, and everything would be fine. But that’s not what happened,” according to a report from People. What did happen was Ades went on a first date with a man (whose name has not been publicly released) she met on Luxy, a dating site for verified millionaires. There was no opportunity for a second date. According to Ades, the man blocked her after their initial meeting.
What happened next was an escalating series of invasive behaviours. It began with the texts. Eventually, this woman sent 65,000 texts, which included 500 that were sent in just 24 hours. When asked by reporters in her jailhouse interview if she thought that was excessive, Ades replied: “Love is an excessive thing.” Many of the texts threatened extreme violence and some of them were openly antisemitic. Though Ades was originally from Florida, she reportedly drove to Arizona to be closer to the man. She told reporters “I wound up [in Arizona] on a road trip from Florida, looking I guess for love,” according to the Washington Post.
When reporters asked Ades about why she sent so many texts, she replied: “Because it made me find out all my information…Loving him selflessly brought me his information. Because everybody just wants to take. But if you just give and you don’t stop giving, you will all of a sudden receive a lot.” The victim had reportedly told police about the harassment last July. Two incidents were also reported where Ades had shown up at the man’s residence. In the first instance, she was parked outside the victim’s house and asked to leave by police. After this event, she began sending more threatening text messages. In December, police were called to the man’s home again after he reported Ades being on his property. However, she was not found by the police at that time.
Then, while the man was out of the country in April, he saw something truly unsettling on his home surveillance. Not only had this woman sent 65,000 texts, but now she had broken into his house. The man informed the Paradise Valley Police Department, who sent officers to the house. Ades’ car was parked outside. According to the police report, there was a large butcher’s knife on the passenger seat. Ades denied this, saying during her interview: “I never had a butcher knife, I had, like, little flippy knives on my road trip. People try to hurt me. I’m a single girl. I drove across America. I don’t carry a butcher knife.” Officers entered the home and found Ades bathing in the man’s bathtub.
Ades was taken into police custody and charged with felony trespassing. She was released, but she never appeared for her court date. Ades soon found herself arrested again after showing up to the man’s business on May 4th, claiming to be his wife. Officers arrested her four days later at her home, according to the police report. She was booked into jail on a failure to appear warrant, and now faces felony charges of stalking and threatening and intimidating. She also faces a misdemeanour charge for harassment, in addition to her existing trespassing charge.
Ades has not hired a lawyer, nor has one been assigned to her, according to court documents. Despite the messages she sent, she told reporters during her prison interview that she never intended any harm to the man, saying: “I just want to love him so much, that’s it. And if he doesn’t like it, I’ll go home, and I’ll love my ex-boyfriend.” When asked if she thought she was dangerous, Ades replied: “No! I think he wanted to make sure I wasn’t or something like that.”
