About three weeks ago at the Olympics Australian TV personality Sam Newman caused some controversy by mocking the art of taekwondo.
Newman said that it was the most ridiculous thing he’s ever seen. He also said it is a whole lot of dancing in his opinion. He was going to retract the statement but decided not to.
A face-off was arranged between Newman and two Australian Olympians. Newman stood by his opinion before the fight saying ‘I’d be happy if he lay something on me because that would be a nice departure from what I’ve seen.’
The Olympians come onto the mat, and Newman appears nervous but acting jovial. He sticks his leg out mockingly trying to entice the Olympian.
The Olympian knocks Newman to the ground, not once but twice while the audience and commentators laugh and cheer.
The commentator comes in to give Newman a moment to compose himself and breathe. Next up is the female Olympian representing Australia.
Again, Newman looks nervous but laughs and throws his leg up as his defence. With one kick she knocks him to the ground while the crowd cheers. After his beatings, the commentator asks Newman if he has anything to say, and Newman apologizes for his previous comments. It seems taekwondo is about skill and not ‘dancing.’
