Dog Always Brings A Leaf To ‘Buy’ Himself Treats At The Store

Most dogs understand “the deal”. They sit, stay and do tricks all in the hopes of getting a treat in return for their doggy antics. This schoolyard pup doesn’t seem to have time for such shenanigans, and instead chooses a more human form of commerce.

The dog, named Negro (the word for the colour black in Spanish), lives on the campus of the Diversified Technical Education Institute of Monterrey Casanare in Colombia. The school’s faculty provides the lovable K9 with food, water, shelter, and love. In return, he keeps a watch over things on campus as staff and students go about their day.

Longtime attendant of the on-campus shop, Gladys Barreto told The Dodo: “He’s very intelligent.” Store workers got a first-hand impression of this early on in Negro’s days at the school. They noticed him becoming very observant of students buying cookies. He became even more intrigued when the kids would give him the cookies.

“He would go to the store and watch the children give money and receive something in exchange,” teacher Angela Garcia Bernal said to The Dodo. Something brilliant clicked in Negro’s head; he’d have to bring something to the store attendants next time he wanted a treat. “One day, spontaneous, he appeared with a leaf in his mouth, wagging his tail and letting it be known that he wanted a cookie,” said Bernal. The shop workers entertained the dog’s adorable stunt, and the rest is history.

Negro now makes daily stops at the store with his chosen form of currency, which is always accepted of course. The staff makes sure his personal treats are safe and meant for dogs. Being that Negro’s “money” literally grows on trees, he tends to go a little overboard, so the staff limits him to a couple of treats per day.

Negro is absolutely adored at the school and puts smiles on faces daily. “When you first see it, you almost want to cry,” Bernal said. “He’s found a way to make himself understood.”
