A famous cosplayer from China was found dead while visiting a ‘wealthy host’ overseas. She was found dead in a swimming pool and could not be revived by those who found her.
Liu Yong was a 25-year-old model and photographer who was known by hundreds of thousands of fans for her ability to imitate video game characters and medieval princesses precisely. She dressed up as characters from Street Fighter and also as princesses from popular Chinese dynasties.
The popular cosplayer was from Hangzhou, the Zhejiang province, and used to have ten apprentices under her belt as well as her own private photo studio.
Cosplay, or costume play, is a hobby in which hobbyists dress up as a specific character (with their accessories) from a comic, manga, video game or movie and meet up to share in their costumes.
Liu Yong, more commonly known as ‘Jovie’, was in Saipan, the largest Northern Mariana Island in the Pacific when she was found dead in a swimming pool.
She was allegedly ‘holidaying’ in Saipan and visiting a ‘wealthy host’ when she was found dead. But no further information has been revealed as to why she went there or who she went with.
The cause of her death is not yet identified but she is believed to have drowned in the pool. Resuscitation efforts performed by those who found her were unsuccessful. The identity of the wealthy male host has not been released.
Fans on her social media have left condolence messages for her and her family over the past 24 hours. She is easily regarded as China’s most enthusiastic cosplayer.
Sina Weibo, which is regarded as Chinese Twitter, has since been bombarded with messages directed at the deceased model. Her photo-sharing platform, Instagram, has also been filled with condolence messages mourning her death.
It has been reported that Jovie’s family was contacted by the local embassy about their daughter’s death. The family has since travelled to the United States commonwealth island.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Jovie and her family at this time.
