Regis Levasseur was just 62 years old when he died in a tragic hunting accident. He was hunting in France’s Compiegne forest when he ‘was charged and pierced by a deer which stabbed him with his antlers.’ The forest was located just 50 miles north-east of Paris.

Police say that Regis was acting as a beater at the time of his death.

His role was to help flush out and corner the prey during the hunt so that the hunters could get a clear shot at him. Regis was unarmed at the time of his death.

During an interview with The Local, the president of the local hunters’ federation, Guy Harle, said: ‘normally the animal would flee but this time he decided to charge. It came after him.’

Guy continued: ‘the antlers of the stag are like many knives piercing you, there is nothing you can do. This tragic accident reminds us that we do not play with a wild animal. There is an inherent risk with hunting.’

Regis was set to get married in the following months. Guy said that ‘hunting was more than a hobby, it was his life.’

Regis’ death comes just days after French hunters shot down a cornered stag in the garden of a residential home.

A video surfaced showing French hunters with their hounds shooting an exhausted stag at close range after cornering it in a garden of a house near the edge of the Compiegne forest in the village of Lacroix-Saint-Ouen.

It has been alleged that the hunters then fed the stag’s carcass to their hounds.

The footage, which was filmed by anti-hunt activists, sparked widespread uproar and called for new debate, focus, and awareness on the topic of hunting. These activists have long stated that hunting is cruel and contributed to animal extinction.

It even caused France’s environment minister, Nicolas Hulot, to lambaste hunting with dogs as ‘a practice from another century.’
