Heather and David Mosher, who are both from East Windsor, Connecticut, were supposed to get married and start the next step in their relationship together. Unfortunately, Heather was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016. The same day that Heather was diagnosed was when David was going to propose. He thought of holding off on the proposal, but he wanted Heather to know that she wouldn’t be going through this alone. So he proposed to her.

The couple is scheduled to have their wedding on December 30th, 2017. But when the date was approaching, the doctors suggested that the couple move up their wedding date. They didn’t believe that Heather would make it to that date.

Heather was hooked up to a ventilator so she wasn’t able to move anywhere. To make the day special for her, her friends and family helped her get into her wedding dress. About 18 hours after the ceremony, Heather died. But the last words she said were the vows to her husband David.

The husband of the bride, David Mosher, has finally broken his silence and spoke to PEOPLE about the heartbreaking story. David told PEOPLE that it was the hardest day of his life. He says that the ceremony didn’t feel like a wedding, but more like a funeral. His reason was that after the ceremony, he knew that he would never see the love of his life ever again.

David mentions that he was crying through the entire ceremony. On a day that most people are thrilled with excitement, it was a sad occasion for David. Committing to someone for the rest of their life is tough, but it’s even tougher when you know that their life is quickly coming to an end. David adds that when Heather died, a part of him died as well.

Heather was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer. The year leading up to the wedding, David had to watch Heather’s health deteriorate as cancer spread throughout her body. But even despite the struggle Heather and David were going through, the two were still determined to get married. David knew that the two were already soulmates. They even called each other husband and wife before they got married. But the two thought that they deserved the chance to be legally husband and wife in front of their friends and family.

She was smiling as friends and family surrounded her. David explains that Heather was incredibly happy because in a way, she beat cancer. She lived longer than anyone ever thought she would. David mentions that the couple originally planned to get married in a church. But days before the wedding, they knew that they had to plan for the wedding to be held in the hospital.

Heather passed away at 12 p.m. on December 23, 2017. The family had her funeral on December 30th, at the same church and on the same date that the couple originally planned to get married.
