In 2006, O.J. Simpson and writer Judith Regan collaborated to write a book called “If I Did It,” which was a hypothetical version of events where Simpson explained how he would have murdered Nicole Brown-Simpson and Ron Goldman had he actually committed the crime. Now, in a previously unreleased O.J Simpson interview that coincided with the book, Simpson himself gives the hypothetical scenario that he may have had an accomplice during the 1994 murders.
The Simpson interview, which never aired until now, focuses on a conversation between O.J. Simpson and Judith Regan. Simpson breaks down how he might have murdered Brown-Simpson and Goldman, speaking entirely in the third person. The interview served as a hypothetical confession, however, as TMZ reports, as some point that during the interview, Simpson begins to speak in the first person.
According to unnamed sources who worked on the interview, Simpson begins by running down the events of the night, and how they might have unfolded from his point of view. He says he drove the infamous Bronco to Nicole’s house with an anonymous friend. He planned on scaring her, bringing with him a knife, gloves, and a hat.
He continues the hypothetical scenario, saying that he looked inside Nicole’s house and saw some candles burning. That was when Ron Goldman came to the house to drop off a pair of sunglasses Nicole’s mother had left at the restaurant where he worked. That was when O.J. became enraged. Nicole came out of the house, and according to Simpson’s hypothetical account, that was when he blacked out. He awoke later, covered in blood.
While the account is only a hypothetical scenario, the source reported to TMZ that during this section of the interview, Simpson broke from the format of speaking in the third person and began speaking in the first person, as if this was something that he had experienced directly. The bulk of the interview is made up of accounts that were supposedly featured in the book “If I Did It: Confessions of A Killer” which O.J. write with the help of Judith Regan.
The book and the Simpson interview were both canceled due to public outrage, as well as pushback from the Brown and Goldman families. It was just this year that the Brown family gave Fox permission to air the interview. The book itself was originally to be released by Reganbooks, Judith Regan’s Harper Collins imprint, however, she was fired after the backlash, and the book remained unpublished.
The controversial interview is set to air on Fox on Sunday, March 11th. Despite being acquitted in the criminal trial for the Brown-Simpson Goldman murders, O.J. Simpson was found liable for wrongful death in a civil lawsuit filed by the Goldman family in 1997. In 2008, Simpson was charged with kidnapping, assault, robbery, and criminal conspiracy after an attempt to steal sports memorabilia from a Las Vegas hotel. He served nine years in prison and was paroled on October 1, 2017.
