3-Year-Old Texas Girl Missing After Dad Allegedly Made Her Stand Outside As Punishment

This past Monday it was reported that a 3-year-old girl from Dallas has gone missing after her father sent her outside as a ‘punishment.’ Authorities are still searching for this girl whose father said she went missing over the weekend after he made her stand outside in the middle of the night as punishment for not drinking her milk.

According to CTV News, Wesley Mathews, 37, said he ordered his little girl, Sherin Mathews, to stand next to a tree behind the fence at the Richardson home at around 3 a.m. This all went down on Saturday. The tree happened to be across an alley from the home.

15 minutes later, Mathews went outside to check on her but Sherin was gone. According to the affidavit, the child has a developmental disability. She was wearing leggings, a pink long-sleeved shirt, and pink flip-flops. On top of all this, Sgt. Kevin Perlich notes that the father only called the police 5 hours after his daughter went missing. This is obviously pretty concerning.

According to CTV news, the Sgt. said: “That does not seem like a normal response that one would do if you have a missing child.” Mathews was arrested on Saturday and was charged with abandoning or endangering a child. He posted bond late Sunday, according to Sgt. Perlich. He could not be reached and it’s not exactly clear if he’s hired an attorney to speak on his behalf.

CTV notes that Mathews told investigators that he spotted a few coyotes in the neighbourhood and that they might have been involved in his daughter’s disappearance. But no animals were spotted and there was no indication that one might have dragged the girl away.

Investigators have seized three vehicles, cell phones and laptops from the family in an effort to find out what happened to Sherin, according to Perlich. There is footage from surveillance cameras that are also being reviewed.

Marissa Gonzales, a CPS spokeswoman, said that the agency she is a part of has actually dealt with this particular family before but she has declined to release any additional information. CTV notes that State Child Protective Services has removed a 4-year-old child from the home as early as this past Monday.

The Sgt. notes that Mathews and his wife had adopted Sherin who was malnourished when the two took her in. He told investigators that it was normal for Sherin to wake up in the middle of the night to eat so that her weight would increase. That may explain the punishment at 3 a.m. Perlich noted, “we don’t have any other indication or evidence that she was forcibly abducted from that area.”
