The irrepressible Judge Judy Sheindlin has become a household name for fans of the long-running reality court show. With her domineering attitude, small claim courtroom disputes have never been so entertaining. However, one of her decisions was more reminiscent of the finale of Air Bud than a typical courtroom judgment.
In her 21 seasons on the air and over 5,000 episodes worth of cases, Judge Judy may have seen it all, but she’s never let the fate of a case rely on a canine before. The case featured two parties who both claimed that they owned the same white poodle named Baby Boy.
The plaintiff filed a suit against a woman saying she was in possession of his dog. However, the defendant claimed she had bought the dog off of the street for $50. The woman brought documents from her veterinarian stating that the poodle was older than the plaintiff claimed his to be, but Judge Judy did not feel that a dog’s age was something that could truly be determined.
Unable to reach a verdict between the two claims, Judge Judy decided that the only way to come to a resolution would be for the dog to be brought into the courtroom. Once Baby Boy was carried in the room, the real owner became immediately evident.
The tension in the courtroom was palpable as the white poodle was carried past the bar. “Madame, listen to me carefully: Put the dog down,” Judge Judy tells the woman escorting the pup despite the defendant’s whispered interdiction.
As soon as the woman released the dog on the courtroom floor, he excitedly ran over to the plaintiff and began jumping up on his leg with his tail wagging rapidly. “He does that to everybody, your honor,” the defendant argued, but Judge Judy wasn’t convinced in the slightest.
“That’s all, take the dog home,” Judge Judy said to the happily reunited plaintiff and his white poodle. The case was featured in an episode that aired back in 2012, but the clip has recently made its way onto the Internet and was quick to go viral.
