Man Who Punched Newborn Daughter To Death Was Found Dead In Prison

Liam Deane was a 22-year-old man who was jailed back in October of 2017 for brutally beating his newborn daughter to death because she ‘was crying.’ The two-day-old girl was brutally murdered and was found to have multiple bruises on her face. She died in hospital just three days later. It was on the morning of July 10 when Liam was left alone with his daughter. He admitted to punching Luna in the face, squeezing her body and then violently shaking her.

Luna was then taken to Leeds General Infirmary where she died in intensive care. The prosecutor, Michael Smith, said that Luna had injuries to her brain, body, and face. ‘He said he was responsible for all of the injuries that she had suffered and he said that Luna had not settled down and he lost control.’ On the 18th of July, Luna’s mother, 21-year-old Karen Bissett, said that her daughter was struggling to breathe after ‘hitting her head overnight.’

When an ambulance arrived, they found Luna’s face to be covered in bruises. A doctor involved in the case said that Luna sustained ‘catastrophic brain injuries.’ It was later during an interrogation when Liam broke down and admitted to the murder. In a written statement he said: ‘seeing Luna on life support in the hospital will last with me forever. I can’t describe how that felt. I would not wish it on my worst enemy.’ Liam’s representative, Richard Wright QC, said: ‘in my submission, there is simply no explanation for the defendant’s behavior. His actions were wholly and utterly out of character for him. The defendant will have a very long time to reflect on his terrible behavior.’

But it was over the past weekend when Liam was found dead in his cell. Liam had been given a life sentence with a minimum of 10 years in prison. Another prisoner, John Westland, has since been charged with the murder of Liam Deane. The 28-year-old appeared at Leeds Magistrates’ Court on November 14 but will have his case passed on to Leeds Crown Court due to its seriousness.
