Everyone loves a true Hollywood love story. We constantly hear about celebrities breaking up, so it’s nice to hear about a relationship that not only has worked, but that has lasted for a long time. It gives people hope that true love does exist. Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen are an example of this.
Long before the two ever met, Mary was actually a huge fan of Ted’s. She would actually turn on Cheers to spend some time with the hot bartender. She told Fox News, “I always thought Ted was brilliant. When I was going through sad times, I’d watch Cheers at the end of the day to make me feel better.”
No one is really sure how Ted felt about Mary’s work in Hollywood before they ever met, but at least now we are confident that the man is equally as obsessed. Sounds pretty adorable if you ask me. The couple ended up meeting in 1993 on the set of Pontiac Moon.
This was the year that Ted was having a pretty difficult time, as he said goodbye to a show he was working on for 11 seasons (Cheers). He was also going through a divorce from his second wife.
He told AARP The Magazine, “I was a mess-and-a-half. I thought, I’m incapable of being in a relationship. But I was working on myself. Ironic how life works in those moments…”
Oddly enough, Mary was a single mom at the time and was going through her own issues. Luckily, the two found each other and offered support to get through it all.
The two got married in 1995 after two years of dating and have continued to star in multiple shows and movies. Through it all, they still have managed to make their Hollywood marriage work.
So what exactly is the secret to this incredible relationship? When Ted was asked for the answer, all he said was “It’s her. I’m married to Mary Steenburgen,” he told Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb back in September.
It’s been 22 years of marriage, yet the two are as crazy for each other as they were back when they first met. Ted describes their relationship “creative passion. I like the way Mary laughs and smiles.” He speaks about his wife like a kid speaks about chocolate. It’s absolutely adorable.
Ted is currently working on the current season of NBC’s The Good Place and told US Weekly how excited he is about spending more time with Mary after filming. He said, “She’s a remarkable human being so I’m just incredibly blessed”.
In fact, their relationship is so strong, the people around them even feel it. Ted’s costar, Kristen Bell, said in an interview: “It’s almost intimidating spending time with Ted and Mary because of how solid and loving and connected they are.” Ah, true love.
