Florida Man Allegedly Beat Girlfriend’s Toddler—Then Sold Her Stuff While She Was At Hospital With Son

David Earl Vickers 31, of Holmes Beach, Florida, has been charged and arrested for second-degree murder and aggravated child abuse for the death of his girlfriend’s son. The crime occurred in August, when Vickers allegedly beat his girlfriend’s 17-month-old son earlier in the year, then pawned off her valuables when she was with her child in the hospital.

According to the Manatee Bay County Sheriff, Vickers was already under custody for a different crime when charges of second-degree murder and aggravated child abuse were laid down.

Vickers himself called 911 when his girlfriend’s son Luca was unresponsive on August 21st. The child was rushed to the emergency room, then airlifted to the John Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida. This is when Vickers allegedly pawned off Luca’s mother’s car stereo.

Just days after the boy was admitted to the hospital before his death, Vicker’s girlfriend noticed that her laptop was also missing. She also found a bottle of water with a pawn shop’s logo in the passenger seat of her car door. Suspecting Vickers, she reported him to the police. Her items were recovered, but this gained little comfort for her in the wake of her son’s passing.

In addition to the crimes he is charged with committing against his girlfriend, Vickers was already charged with grand theft auto, two counts of dealing with stolen goods, and two counts of fraud. It’s been reported that Vickers pleaded not guilty to all of these charges.

It is not clear how Vickers pleaded against the death of Luca Sholey.

Luca’s organs were donated to help save the lives of two children and one man after passing away at the John Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida. David Vickers faces trial for his charges in the upcoming weeks.
