The Met Gala is one of fashion’s most highly anticipated events of the year. The benefit raises money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art‘s Costume Institute and invites stars to show up in their best looks. Every year, the Met Ball celebrates the theme of that year’s costume exhibit at the museum. This year’s theme was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.”
The exhibit was actually approved of by the Vatican, according to the New York Times. They even lent the museum different garments and accessories to showcase. People were unsure what kind of looks the Met Gala would bring about this year, but the stars showed up in their “Sunday best”.
This year just like the rest was jam-packed with supermodels, actors, actresses, and artists. The head of the event and Editor-In-Chief of Vogue magazine, Anna Wintour, was joined by her other co-chairs Rihanna, Donatella Versace and Amal Clooney. While some outfits fizzled, most dazzled by being over-the-top and most importantly, on-theme.
Kim Kardashian is always one of the most anticipated stars to walk the Met red carpet. She always has us on the edge of our seats waiting for her arrival. And, she and never disappoints. She walked the carpet at the 2018 Gala in a golden, floor-length gown by Versace, sticking on-theme with embroidered crucifixes.
Zendaya wasn’t playing around with her attempt to channel Joan of Arc. She wore Versace in a chain mail gown complete with literal armour. The singer sported a unique blunt orange bob.
Sarah Jessica Parker gave us one of the more elaborate looks of the evening. The actress wore a Dolce and Gabbana gown with shimmering red hearts. As we’ve seen at past Mets, she likes to go all out with her headpieces. This one in particular featured the nativity scene depicting Mary, Joseph and of course, baby Jesus.
Jennifer Lopez stunned in a bedazzled dress by Balmain. The giant crucifix kept her look very on-theme. Daily Mail has reported that Lopez’s dress is currently being auctioned off on IfOnly.com. The money will go towards the fight against AIDS.
Madonna couldn’t have asked for a better theme this year. The “Like A Prayer” singer wore a floor-length black gown by French designer Jean Paul Gaultier. She paired her look with a regal crown and carried black roses down the red carpet. The icon even surprised Met Gala attendees with a performance.
Lily Collins’ look has been a fan favorite on social media. She looked very gothic-chic in a cut-out dress by Givenchy. She kept her hair sleek and pulled back to accentuate her silver halo headpiece. At the Met afterparty, she kept the top half of the dress on and paired it with black trousers.
Kate Bosworth was looking very Mother Mary in a dress and veil designed by Oscar de la Renta. The ballgown was flecked with golden accents and her veil featured intricate beading. The headpiece came all the way down behind her arms doubling as a flowy cape.
Migos, finally some men getting into the theme! The rap trio went matchy-matchy in bright, boldly patterned Versace suits completing the look decked out in bling. If you remember, Migos’ first hit single was called “Versace” and so why would they have shown up in anything else?
Amanda Seyfried looked absolutely angelic in her renaissance-style gown by Prada. Her golden tiara and belt were the perfect finishing touches to make her look oh so heavenly. The color of her dress is the exact shade of yellow used in the flag of Vatican City.
Rita Ora showed up with a larger-than-life train on a sheer gown by Prada. She paired the dress with classy over-the-elbow gloves. The statement-making headdress was no doubt the star of her look. She told Vogue magazine her hairdresser created it in three days.
Amal Clooney was one of the co-chairs of the Met this year. Along with husband George Clooney, they were the first to kick off the red carpet event. Mrs. Clooney donned a chic navy blue bottom with a floral bustier and matching train. The outfit was by designer Richard Quinn who was recently given the royal stamp of approval after being awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design, according to Vogue.
Katy Perry looked like she belonged on a Victoria’s Secret runway. Her theatrical look had audiences in awe. The gold chain-linked mini dress, thigh high boots and six-foot tall wings were all designed by Versace. E! News red carpet cameras actually caught Perry almost accidentally knocking a woman over with her giant feathery wings.
