According to Nations Online, third World countries are often categorized by the fact that they are poor or have low qualities of life than other places. However, the distinction between first, second and third world countries are really about which ideology or country you decided to back after World War 2. If you shared American ideology, you were a first world country. Anyone who backed the Soviets was second world countries and the rest of the world was considered to be ‘third world’. While nowadays the term third world has evolved, its origins remain very west-centric, something we as a society have been trying to distance ourselves from in recent years.
