By now most are aware of the devastation that was wrought upon the Las Vegas strip this past weekend. It was during a country concert when a 64-year-old gunman named Stephen Paddock opened fire on a crowd of more than 22,000 people. He smashed open two windows on his 32nd-floor suite in the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino to shoot at the concertgoers.
It has been reported that he killed himself before police could get to him.
However, more details are starting to emerge about the deadly killer’s past.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that Stephen Paddock’s father was a felon as he escaped prison for robbing a bank and then tried to run over an FBI agent when they tried to capture him.
But a look into Stephen’s mental state just weeks before the shooting can show a closer and darker glimpse into his personal life.
Just weeks before the shooting. Stephen showed signs of extreme weight loss, an increasingly dishevelled appearance and a growing obsession with his girlfriend’s ex-husband.
According to travel records obtained by ABC News, Marilou Danley is the shooter’s girlfriend and she was sent off to the Philippines about two weeks before the shooting.
On September 15, Marilou Danley landed in Manila and it was this Tuesday night when she returned back to the States where she was met by investigators at the airport.
According to many law enforcement officials, Danley was questioned by FBI agents the next day and denied any involvement in the shooting.
Danley’s lawyer, Matthew Lombard, has since released an official statement on behalf of his client.
‘He never said anything to me or took any action that I was aware of that I understood in any way to be a warning that something horrible like this was going to happen’
The statement went on to describe how Stephen had found Danley a last-minute plane ticket to the Philippines and then subsequently sent her a large sum of money.
Stephen claimed that the plane ticket was found last-minute thus it was cheap and enabled Danley a chance to visit her family.
During her time there, Stephen wired her approximately 100,000 dollars to buy a house for her and her family. Marilou Danley said: ‘I was grateful but honestly I was worried that first the unexpected trip home and then the money was a way of breaking up with me.’
So far investigators have said that Marilou is not in custody but she remains a person of interest since authorities discovered a large stockpile of weapons, ammunition and explosives in the home she shared with Stephen.
