‘Surrogate’ Isn’t Actually The Proper Term For The Woman Who Carried Kim Kardashian’s New Baby

It was on January 15 when Kim Kardashian and her husband, Kanye West, happily announced the arrival of their third child, Chicago West. While many fans of the Kardashian-West family were aware of the fact that Kim used a surrogate for her third child, the reality star revealed that the term ‘surrogate’ is actually not the right word used to describe her.

It was on her own personal blog where Kim revealed that she and Kanye chose to use a gestational carrier and not a surrogate.

The difference is that a surrogate is a woman who uses her own egg while a gestational carrier has no biological relationship with the child. She is simply carrying the fertilized egg in her body.

In her blog, Kim wrote: ‘after exploring many options, Kanye and I decided to use a gestational carrier. Although I have used the term ‘surrogate’ in the past, a gestational carrier is actually the technical term for a woman who carries a baby that she has no biological relationship to.’

She continued: ‘a traditional surrogate donates her egg, is artificially inseminated with the father’s sperm, and then carries the baby to term. Since we implanted my fertilized egg in our gestational carrier, our baby is biologically mine and Kanye’s.’
