Actor Luke Wilson and professional golfer Bill Haas were both involved in a fatal car accident that left the driver of a now wrecked Ferrari dead. The accident occurred on Tuesday in the neighbourhood of Pacific Palisades in Los Angeles. Wilson was unharmed and Haas had his injuries treated at a hospital before being released.
The fatal car accident involved three vehicles: the Ferrari driven by Haas’s friend, 71-year-old Mark William Gibello, a BMW, and a Toyota SUV being driven by Wilson. A 50-year-old woman who was also involved in the crash was taken to the hospital in “serious condition,” according to the LAPD.
Jeff Fischer, a detective in the LAPD, told CNN that the Ferrari had clipped Wilson’s SUV before colliding with the BMW. After the initial collision, the Ferrari was driven into a tree. Sean Heirigs, a tattoo artist who witnessed the crash, said that Luke Wilson actually pulled the woman out of her car.
Heirigs, who assisted Wilson in pulling the woman from her vehicle, told Global News “Luke went around the back, to the trunk of the car. We pried it open, she was able to unbuckle herself, and Luke started to pull her out from the back. We then both carried her to the curb.” Heirigs continued to say that Wilson “led the charge.” He said “[Wilson] was calm. He was definitely a hero, a super nice guy.”
Bill Haas had been staying with the family of the deceased Ferrari driver in the lead-up to playing in the Genesis Open. Since the accident, Haas has withdrawn from the tournament to recover at his home in South Carolina. The golfer’s father, Jay Haas, told the Golf Channel that his son was experiencing pain and swelling in one of his legs.
According to a statement from Bill Haas’s manager, Allen Hobbs, Haas “is understandably shaken up.” The statement continued, saying Haas’s “deepest condolences go out to the host family during this tragic and difficult time.” Bill Harmon, Haas’s swing coach, told ESPN that Haas was “very distraught” while he was in the hospital.
Linda Smith, a Pacific Palisades resident, told KABC-TV: “There was no screeching that I heard of or anything of that sort. It all happened very quickly.” She added that “it was a huge bang sound, just one huge crash.” Police are still determining whether speed was a factor. Neither Luke Wilson nor his representatives have commented on the fatal car accident.
